"Site specific design is what we believe in. Our unique materials and our process always circle back to the place of origin- Malawi. We call this repurposed work of functional art, The Salima Coffee Table. The story behind the table makes it one of our favorite pieces in the Contour collection. We often drive around Malawi looking for and collecting old pieces of machinery, parts of old boats and cars. We collect these items and after a curating process, we incorporate some of what we gather in our designs. For this design, we used reclaimed railway sleepers and plate steel, both found in the village of Salima, near Lake Malawi."
-Jamar Simien, Creative Director of Contour
Named after the village, this coffee table is low in profile and high in character. Designed by award-winning artist Jamar Simien, the character of this composition is conveyed with photos, but it's even more impressive in person.
Featuring Contour's custom steel legs found and fabricated in Malawi, the design calls on historical elements of Mid Century Modern, but it fearlessly carves it's own path in the world of premium furniture design. All of the materials are indigenous to East Africa and have all been repurposed. The sketch for this design was made by Jamar Simien in the village of Salima, near Central Malawi. Several days later, after collaborating with our team in Malawi, we had a prototype for the design. After carefully refining every aspect of the idea, our dream became a reality.
ART GOES GREEN:
In partnership with Root to Fruit, we are pledging to plant 15 fruit trees in the country of Malawi when this table is sold. The client can choose the tree species, will receive a certificate from the non-profit organization, and will also have a GPS location of where their trees have been planted in Africa.
